Planet Zoo 2 Known Issues & Fixes: Waterlogged, Navigation, Crashes

The known Planet Zoo 2 waterlogged fix plus workarounds for navigation, shelter, and Franchise bugs — every issue listed with its source and date.

Quick answer: The most-searched launch bug — terrain stuck “waterlogged” — was officially fixed in Update 1.0.4 (October 14, 2026), which added a dedicated button to remove waterlogged and snow terrain. Animal navigation, auto-boxing, and shelter-adjacent pathing issues were also improved in that patch. Everything below is dated and sourced — official patch notes, official community messages, or explicitly labeled community reports.

Which Launch Issues Has Frontier Officially Acknowledged?

Frontier’s official Update 1.0.4 patch notes (published October 14, 2026 on the official updates page) include an “Ongoing Areas of Focus” list — problems the developer openly says are not fully fixed yet:

  • Animals climbing, jumping, and pouncing will see ongoing improvements (official patch notes, Oct 14, 2026).
  • Some animals don’t align with their enrichments correctly on occasion (official patch notes, Oct 14, 2026).
  • Animals sometimes erroneously escape from habitats during certain behaviours (official patch notes, Oct 14, 2026).
  • Animals are being boxed more frequently than usual, including when migrating in wild areas (official patch notes, Oct 14, 2026).
  • The team is investigating feedback on the core creative toolset (official patch notes, Oct 14, 2026).
  • Franchise Mode stability is being monitored following the 1.0.4 fixes (official patch notes, Oct 14, 2026).

Seeing one of these in version 1.0.4? It is a known, officially tracked issue — not your zoo or your hardware.

How Do I Fix Waterlogged Terrain?

The single most-reported launch problem, with a clear resolution history:

  • October 13, 2026 (launch day): Players discovered that terrain painted with the new waterlogged ground type could not be removed again — the terrain tool only offered the option to add it. This is extensively documented in community reports, for example the Reddit thread “How do I remove waterlogged from the terrain?” (r/PlanetZoo, October 14, 2026). Community-reported, but widespread and easily reproducible.
  • Community workaround (October 13–14, 2026): Players found that pressing R while the waterlogged brush is active toggles it between adding and removing the terrain (community-shared on r/PlanetZoo, Oct 14, 2026). This worked before any patch and still works now.
  • Official fix (October 14, 2026): Update 1.0.4 “added a button to switch to removing the waterlogged and snow terrain” (official patch notes, Oct 14, 2026). So the current game has both an on-screen button and the R-key toggle.

If you are on version 1.0.4 or later and still cannot remove waterlogged ground, verify your build is updated (SteamDB shows the live PC build refreshed on October 15, 2026) and that you are using the waterlogged brush itself, not the generic demolish tool. For habitat layout around wet terrain, our habitat design guide covers terrain planning in more depth.

Are Animals Ignoring Shelters a Bug?

Partially official, partially community-reported — the distinction matters here:

  • Official: Update 1.0.4 lists “Animal navigation, including a reduction in the frequency animals are automatically boxed” and improvements to “animals erroneously escaping from habitats” as shipped fixes (official patch notes, Oct 14, 2026). Erroneous escapes and random auto-boxing were breaking animals’ ability to reach — and stay inside — sheltered areas.
  • Community-reported, not yet officially confirmed: Players report animals that have a valid shelter but never path to it, or custom-built shelters that don’t register toward the requirement (community reports, Oct 14–15, 2026). Frontier has not confirmed a standalone “shelter pathfinding” bug in official communications; these may overlap with the acknowledged navigation issues above or with shelter-design rules.
  • Official guidance worth checking first: Frontier’s own player guide states that a shelter only counts if it is “big enough for animals to fit inside,” and recommends checking suitability with the Shelter heatmap (official player guide, planetzoogame.com). Many “bugged shelter” cases are an undersized entrance or a shelter facing a busy guest path rather than a code defect. If the heatmap shows valid shelter and the animal still never uses it, report it — see the last section.

Navigation ties into welfare too — unreachable food, water, or shelter tanks an animal’s score; our animal welfare guide explains how to read and repair it.

On the crash reports: Frontier published a PC launch troubleshooting article (official support, customersupport.frontier.co.uk, Oct 2026), and 1.0.4 says “fixed several crashes” — but neither claims every reported crash is resolved. Treat any repeatable crash as reportable.

Where Should I Report a Bug?

Frontier has directed players to two official channels (confirmed in its October 2026 community communications):

  1. The Issue Tracker at issues.frontierstore.net/reported-issues/planet-zoo-2 — for reproducible bugs. Include reproduction steps, your save file, and platform.
  2. Frontier Support via the support form (linked from the same community posts) — for account, login, and purchase problems.

For confirmed fixes, follow our update tracker. New players should also check the beginner guide — some things that look like bugs are working as intended.
